FL Comprehensive Civics Curriculum

Audience: Grades 6-8

Responsibilities: Curriculum design and development, Synchronous learning

Tools Used: Google Suite, Canva, Schoology

Problem

Before implementing the revised curriculum, middle school students within the Polk County School District at a school called DSA were consistently underperforming in civics education. Standardized test scores and classroom assessments revealed a concerning trend of low achievement, with scores falling significantly below both state and national averages. The core issues contributing to this trend included outdated teaching materials, a lack of engagement with current civic events, and instructional methods that did not cater to the diverse learning styles present in a modern middle school classroom.

Solution

In response to these issues, I undertook a comprehensive overhaul of the civics curriculum. The new curriculum was designed with an emphasis on interactive and student-centered inquiry- based learning experiences, incorporating a variety of multimedia resources and practical applications of civic knowledge. Digital resources were developed to ensure seamless integration with both in-person and remote learning environments, thus maintaining educational continuity during the pandemic and beyond.

Process

The comprehensive civics curriculum contains a blend of 34 differentiated readings, activities, and projects based on the most relevant learning theories for the goal and audience. All content is available in two versions: for physical in-classroom learners and digital learners.

The course is first divided into 4 Reporting Categories according to the Florida Department of Education Civics End-of-Course Assessment Test Item Specifications. The 34 listed standards were then divided into each category according to topic.

These theories and practices used to design the course recognize the importance of active engagement, creativity, arts integration, and the physical manipulation of materials in learning. When students are involved in artistic and hands-on activities, they are often more engaged and motivated, which can lead to a deeper and more meaningful learning experience.

Takeaways

Efforts to revitalize the civics curriculum have resulted in a dramatic and sustained improvement in student outcomes. Since the implementation of the new program, middle school students at one particular school have not only shown marked improvements in their civics test scores, but they have also maintained the highest public school pass rate for four consecutive years. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the curriculum and its adaptability to the evolving educational landscape. It is a testament to the importance of innovative curriculum design and its impact on fostering civic awareness and understanding among young learners.
